Jacksonville is Florida’s largest container port and one of the ten largest container gateways in the United States. JAXPORT handled about 1.34 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in 2024, ranking 9th among U.S. container ports in a national port comparison, and volume increased to nearly 1.39 million TEUs in fiscal 2025. Its container traffic is spread across Blount Island, Dames Point, and Talleyrand, with a 47-foot shipping channel, modern post-Panamax container cranes, and direct connections to major highway and rail networks. Recent terminal improvements have increased JAXPORT’s potential annual container-handling capacity to roughly 2 million TEUs.

One of the most unusual aspects of Jacksonville’s container market is its enormous trade relationship with Puerto Rico. Jacksonville is the leading U.S. mainland gateway for Puerto Rico, handling about 90% of maritime trade between the island and the mainland, while also receiving international container services from Asia, Latin America, and other global markets. This creates a particularly diverse and steady flow of 20ft, 40ft, and 40ft high-cube equipment through the region, supported by two intermodal container transfer facilities and connections to both CSX and Norfolk Southern. Containers are plentiful in Jacksonville, and prices are near the lower end of the container spectrum due to the supply of equipment in the area.
